A warm welcome to Caroline T. Arruda
Caroline T. Arruda is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Texas at El Paso. She is visiting CSMN from 2 May until 20 June.
Here is Caroline's presentation of her research:
"My current and future research sits at the intersection of ethics (both normative ethics and metaethics) and philosophy of action. In particular, I focus on the relevance of conceptions of agency and intentional action for understanding the nature of our moral and political obligations to others. While at CSMN, I will work on my monograph in progress, Enriching Practical Reason. In this monograph, I focus on an underappreciated problem with the idealized picture of practical reason. My aim is to provide an account of the nature of attitudes such as endorsements and commitments that do not typically figure in an idealized picture of the practically rational agent and are often thought to undermine practical deliberation. My suggestion is that a better understanding of the nature of these attitudes—namely, their distinctive features—will demonstrate that they do not hinder practical reason; rather, they actually enrich it, given their ubiquity in the lives of actual agents."
