By treating the popular yet controversial Chinese dating show “If You Are the One” as a kaleidoscope of contemporary Chinese views on marriage and family, and as an arena in which the traditional and modern ideologies collide, the project will be a case study on the effectivity of popular culture as well as an investigation of media policy in a changing China.
Circuit of Culture (Du Gay et al. 1997) will be employed as the general theoretical framework for analyzing the cultural processes of the dating show as a media spectacle. Meanwhile, the research is grounded in an interdisciplinary methodological framework of production observation and interview, industry analysis, textual analysis, content analysis, etc.
