PhD Project

From January 2012 onwards I am working with a PhD project with the working title On the Threshold: Doorways and thresholds as social, spatial, and ritual features in Late Iron Age Scandinavia. The project aspires to explore social, ritual and symbolic meanings of doorways in the Late Iron Age-Viking Period (CE 550-1050).

The theoretical framework is anchored in ideas on socio-spatiality and the reciprocity of physical and social space; practice theory and liminality theory. The empirical foundations will include the Norwegian settlement corpus from the Late Iron Age, as well as iconography, written sources, placed deposits and other material from the entire Scandinavian area. Expected completion date is February 2015.
