A post-doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1352) in the project "Using the Past in the Past. Viking Age Scandinavia as a Renaissance?" is available at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History (IAKH), University of Oslo.

Applicants are to submit a research proposal concerning recycling of material culture of the past in the Viking Age, using for example the reiteration of grave monuments at settlements; the reuse of burial grounds; landscape analyses of central places; the raising of rune stones as a means of creating places for commemoration; or the utilisation of antique artefacts and objects that stylistically referred to previous centuries in the Viking Age as a means of examining social and cultural changes in the Viking Age. The research proposal must outline plans for dissemination in international, academically recognised journals.

The Institute of Archaeology at UCL currently has a vacancy for a a part-time Research Assistant for the 'Iron Age and Roman Heritages: exploring ancient identities' project, a 3 year project which aims to assess how the Iron Age and Roman pasts of England, Scotland and Wales are called upon today, situating this understanding in an international context.

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management of non-relational (NoSQL) database and of heritage crowd-sourcing, taking on both technical tasks and community management/public engagement tasks.

The post holder will have an MA or MSc in Computational Archaeology, Computer Science, Data Science, Digital Heritage, Digital Sociology, Information Studies, Digital Humanities or equivalent in a relevant field of knowledge. Experience of databases and database management and Python and/or R programming is essential.

The post is available from 1 February 2017 for 18 months in the first instance.

A Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1352) in archaeology, art history or cultural history is available at the Norwegian Institute in Rome, University of Oslo.

The Norwegian Institute in Rome is a centre that conducts research, training and outreach in relation to archaeology, art history and cultural history in the Italy and the Mediterranean region. This includes studies of antiquity and its broader impact on western culture, religion, language, literature and society. The Graduate School „Human Development in Landscapes“ at Kiel University, Germany offers a unique research environment positioned at the interface of the Humanities, Natural, and Social Sciences. In the research group of the Junior Professorship for Anthropological Archaeology, a Doctoral scholarship is being offered to commence as soon as possible.

The scholarship, amounting to 1450,-€ per month, will initially be available for two years with a potential to be extended for a third year.

In the framework of its multi-disciplinary investigation of the Ancient Mediterranean, the Max Planck Harvard project announces up to three 5-year Full Fellowships in Biological Archaeology/Archaeometry and Archaeogenetics to sponsor graduate study leading to a PhD in Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

The  first fellowship(s) will be available to students admitted by Harvard for the academic year 2017-2018.

PhD studies will be carried out at the Osteoarchaeological Research Laboratory.

The main research areas in Osteoarchaeology include scientific analyses (morphometry, palaeopathology etc.) of both human and animal remains using osteoarchaeological source materials with an emphasis on archaeological interpretation. Researchers at the laboratory lead and cooperate in various archaeological projects in Sweden and abroad.

Research in Classical archaeology and ancient history at Stockholm University covers Greek and Roman cultures in the Mediterranean area from the Stone Age to c. AD 500.

Our research covers history, religion, philosophy, literature, art, as well as archaeological material. Both material evidence and written sources are examined in their context. Thus, PhD projects and research at the department are both multi- and interdisciplinary. Part of the programme is placed at the Swedish institutes in Athens and Rome, and there are opportunities to partake in Swedish field-projects in the Mediterranean area.

The Department of Anthropology of Columbia University invites applications for an Archaeologist, to be appointed as a tenure-track assistant professor beginning July 1, 2017. Region and field of specialization are open.

A strong theoretical orientation, a fieldwork program, and an interest in active conversation with sociocultural faculty are required. Ph.D. required. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

Ved Universitetet i Tromsø – Norges arktiske universitet (UiT) er det ledig stilling som førsteamanuensis i nordisk mellomalderarkeologi. Stillingen er tilknyttet Institutt for arkeologi og sosialantropologi (IAS), Institutt for historie og religionsvitenskap (IHR) og forskningsgruppa Creating the New North (CNN).

Stillingen er en videreføring av UiTs langvarige satsing på mellomalderarkeologi og nyere tids arkeologi (perioden e.Kr.1000-1800) i Nord-Norge og det nordlige Fennoskandinavia. Den som tilsettes må kunne dokumentere forskningskompetanse innen dette felt. Forskningens flernasjonale og fleretniske orientering innen feltet vil tillegges vekt. Det vil også legges vekt på evne til formidling for et vitenskapelig og allment publikum. Det er en fordel om den som tilsettes har kjennskap til skandinaviske språk sett i sammenheng med stillingens tematiske og kronologiske avgrensning.

Ved Kulturhistorisk museum, Arkeologisk seksjon er det ledig tre stillinger som førsteamanuensis i nordisk arkeologi innenfor fagområdene jakt/fangst og annen utmarksbruk eller jernalderarkeologi.

Stillingene er knyttet til seksjonens løpende oppgaver innen kulturminneforvaltningen. I stillingene inngår 50 % forskningstid og 50 % musealt arbeid. Planlegging og gjennomføring av arkeologiske undersøkelser i forbindelse med samfunnsutbygging vil være sentrale oppgaver; likeledes vil samlings- og gjenstandsarbeid inngå i porteføljen. Videre innebærer arbeidet faglig rådgivning og formidling, herunder kontakt med publikum og den øvrige kulturminneforvaltningen.

Museene i Sør-Trøndelag ønsker seg en ny kollega i ledergruppen, og har nå en ledig stilling som museumsdirektør på Museet Kystens Arv med ansvar for drift og utvikling av museet.

Museet Kystens Arv er et av ni museer i MiST, og ligger i Rissa kommune - bare 50 minutter fra Trondheim. Museet er et viktig kystmuseum, med spesialkompetanse på bygging og bruk av klinkbygde tradisjonsbåter. Museet er i stor utvikling gjennom bygging av ett nytt museumsbygg som åpner i 2017.

One Doctoral Research Fellowship (PhD) within archaeology is available in the Department of Archaeology and Social Anthropology at the University of Tromsø - The Arctic University of Norway (UiT). The position is affiliated to the research group Joint Proxies Research Group (Joint research on human and natural adaptation to changing climates and environments in the High North).

The position will focus on new analyses and methods pertaining to the study of how human economy during the Younger Stone Age (5000 - 1800 BC) and Early Metal Age (1800 - 0 BC) related to climate change over a total of 5000 years. New theories, methods, techniques, and data have emerged in recent years and makes it possible to study prehistoric economy from new perspectives. To this end, and seen in a world perspective, the archaeological material from Northern Norway is unique.

The Excellence Cluster 264 Topoi is now offering a doctoral fellowship for the 2016/17 winter semester (starting October 1, 2016). Applicants should have an excellent university degree in prehistoric archaeology, prehistory and early history, Near Eastern archaeology, classical archaeology, or Egyptology.

The applicant should conduct an independent research project entitled “Bronze Age Glass Between the Eastern Mediterranean and the Baltic. An Innovation History”. The doctoral thesis should illuminate Bronze Age glass as an innovation history in a broad context: from the early phase in the first half of the 2nd millennium BC, through the period of frequent occurrence the 15th century BC, to the stage in which the innovation spread rapidly as far as the Greek mainland, the Central Mediterranean, and Central Europe.

Det er ledig en fast stilling som arkeolog (rådgiver SKO 1434) ved Kulturhistorisk museum. Stillingen er tilknyttet magasinene på Arkeologisk seksjon (AS) og Seksjon for etnografi, numismatikk og klassisk arkeologi (SENK).

Hovedoppgavene er mottak og håndtering av arkeologiske og numismatiske funn, funnregistrering og saksbehandling. Arbeidsoppgavene vil være delt mellom de to seksjonene, med 80 % tilstedeværelse på AS og 20 % på SENK.
