The Faculty of Humanities at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology invites applications for up to ten PhD-positions. The positions will be for a period of three years without required duties or up to four years with 25 per cent set aside for such duties, depending on the Department’s needs.

The positions are open to applicants from all academic research areas within the Faculty of Humanities. The project must be within the framework of the Faculty’s strategy (http://www.ntnu.edu/hf/strategy). The applicant must detail the project’s affiliation to existing research groups at the Faculty of Humanities, NTNU. A potential supervisor from one of the Faculty’s departments must be named in the application. We recommend that applicants get in touch with the research group and potential supervisors early in the process.

Applications are invited for five PhD fellowships at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Amsterdam, tenable from 1 November 2016 (4 years, 0.8 FTE). 

Applicants must have a completed Master’s degree in a field relevant to the proposed PhD project and the research areas of the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research (AIHR)/ The Institute for Logic, Language, and Computation (ILLC) before the start date of the fellowship.

Det norske institutt i Roma tilbyr stipend for reise og opphold i Roma 2016-2017 for forskere ansatt ved norske universiteter og høyskoler, deriblant doktorgradsstipendiater og ansatte i postdoktor stillinger.

Størrelsen på stipendet vil avhenge av søkerens prosjekt og oppholdets varighet. Oppholdet må finne sted i 2016 og/eller i første kvartal av 2017. Oppholdet kan være minimum to uker, og støtte kan gis for inntil 6 måneder. Søkerne som blir tildelt stipend vil få arbeidsplass ved DNIR, og støtten skal dekke reise og opphold, men inkluderer ikke lønnsmidler.

Ved Institutt for historiske studier, NTNU, lyses det ut et ledig vikariat (100 % stilling) som universitetslektor i arkeologi for perioden 01.08.16 til 31.05.17.

Stillingen innebærer varierte undervisningsoppgaver på BARK og MARK, forelesninger og seminarer, veiledning av øvingsoppgaver, materialkurs, feltøvinger og ekskursjoner. Engasjementet vil også omfatte oppgaver innenfor prosjekt «Innovativ undervisning: NTNUs arkeologistudie og kalibreringsbehov mot virkeligheten utenfor». Variert arbeid med driften av arkeologistudiet (undervisningsplanlegging, tilrettelegging av pensum, kvalitetssikring mm) må også påregnes.

The Department of SAXO, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark, invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral position in Classical Archaeology with a specialization in the material culture of the Hellenistic and Roman Aegean to be filled by 1st April 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful candidate will carry out research on the process, classification and analysis of Hellenistic and Roman finds, including pottery, from excavations in the city and necropolis of ancient Rhodes. This research will be part of an interdisciplinary project that seeks to study and publish six unpublished building complexes from the city and the necropolis of Rhodes (3rd c. BC -2nd c. AD).

Kulturhistorisk museum søker en person med samlingskompetanse og erfaring fra magasinarbeid.

Den som tilsettes vil samarbeide tett med de andre magasinforvalterne ved museet, men også med andre faggrupper; forskere, konservatorer og fotografer. Magasinforvalteren vil primært arbeide i magasinene til Kulturhistorisk museum, som i dag er lokalisert på flere ulike steder i Oslo. Arbeidsoppgavene omfatter også planlegging for flytting av samlingene til nye magasinlokaler.

A Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in archaeology/object conservation is available at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History (IAKH), University of Oslo. The PhD project will be positioned between archaeology and conservation with mentors from both fields.

The position is reserved for a multi/interdisciplinary research project on material studies that has to combine archaeology, archaeometry and object conservation. The project should focus on inorganic material from archaeological contexts. It should be relevant for non-organic artefacts, their technology and deterioration.

A Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in archaeology is available at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History, University of Oslo. It is required that the themes of the proposed projects are relevant for ongoing research at the Department within Nordic Prehistory (Neolithic to Early Iron Age) or Mediterranean archaeology (Iron Age to Roman Republic). 

Central research topics in the Department include the societal transformations, economy, settlement archaeology, social organization, technology, burial practices and identity. The project description must be theoretically and methodologically sophisticated. It is an advantage if the proposed project is interdisciplinary in scope and approach (e.g. towards science, ecology, geography, technology or anthropology).

The Palmyra Portrait Project offers 1 fully funded PhD scholarship from 1 September 2016 - 31 August 2019 within the framework of the Project.

The project has been running since January 2012 and has since then compiled the most comprehensive corpus of Roman-period funerary portraits from Palmyra, which at present comprises approximately 3,000 portraits. The project director is currently looking for a scholar who has expertise within ancient portraiture, and who would like to become part of one of the frontrunner projects within ancient portraiture. The team members of the Palmyra Portrait Project have worked on a variety of aspects of the corpus, including priestly representations, women and children.

The research shall be within the field of historical maritime archaeology; that is human’s relationship with the sea and water in a broad sense during the historical era. The research has to involve activities or ideas that have left material traces behind.

The position is mainly directed towards research, but the holder is expected to participate in teaching (maximum 20%) on basic and advanced levels. The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances.

It is required that the themes of the proposed projects are relevant for ongoing research at the Department. Applicants within critical cultural heritage will have priority. Central research topics in the Department include the contemporary role of cultural heritage, of the past or of particular historical epochs in contemporary cultural heritage, cultural heritage and the history of ideas in archaeology, memory studies, cultural heritage management, cultural heritage and conflict, illicit trade and ethics.

Stiftelsen ledigförklarar nu för 2016 ett eller flera stipendier till enskilda forskare.

Ansökningar från föreningar, institutioner och motsvarande kommer inte att beaktas. Det belopp som totalt står till förfogande vid detta tillfälle uppgår till 100 000 kr. Medel kan även sökas för förstudier, programarbete e.dyl., som inledning till en större undersökning. I första hand kommer ansökningar som berör Skåne, Halland och Blekinge att beaktas. Pengar delas inte ut för trycknings- eller översättningskostnader.

The department is interested in developing research questions with a northern focus, including circumpolar archaeology, with a connection to environmental change and human interactions with nature.

Applications relating to the digital humanities (DH), including the use or analysis of digital technology in research are particularly welcome. The department also welcomes applications with an emphasis on understanding the relationships between people, environments and environmental change during the Holocene, where both cultural and environmental perspectives are considered, and especially in relation to Global Societal Challenges.
