Research topic: History of science

The history of science is the history of the sciences and their role and significance in society throughout the ages.

It includes not only natural science and technology, but also historical studies of the social sciences and the humanities. It is usual to study the development of science in the context of its broader social and historical contexts.

Science is not just ideas and theories, but a social, institutionalized activity which consists of diverse intellectual and material practices, for example experiments, field observation, analysis of data, theorizing, classification and publication.

The history of science analyses how different societies at different times have organized and validated the production and distribution of scientific knowledge.

By focusing on the creation of new knowledge, education of professional experts, and application of science in academic institutions, government bodies, museums and private business, historians of science shed light on how the modern, industrial and knowledge-based society has come into existence.
