SUMMER COURSE IN PAPYROLOGY

Course description

Intensive course in papyrology for advanced bachelor, master and early PhD students in Classics and Ancient History (secondary target: students in Egyptology/Coptic students with topics that touch on bilingualism/language contact).

The course consists of: (i) lectures on the method of editing and dating papyrus texts, on text types and their historical context (historical developments, archives), on digital tools and conservation and how they contribute to enhance the research work on papyri. (ii) supervised work with the edition of a papyrus from the Oslo collection (each student is assigned a local supervisor who guides him/her through the editorial research work.

 

Target group

Advanced bachelor, master and early PhD students in Classics and Ancient History.

Secondary target group: students with background in Late Antique studies and/or in Egyptology/Coptic with topics that touch on bilingualism and contact between Egyptian and Greek.

 

Learning outcome

The students will be able to carry out the research work required to prepare an edition of a papyrus text, i.e. decipher the text and present a normalised text, provide a translation, date the papyrus, contextualise the text (historically, linguistically etc. as appropriate) and prepare a line-by-line commentary. The students will also be able to assess the research work and the editorial decisions that underlie a papyrus text edition when this is used for historical, linguistic etc. research. They will also be able to carry out simple conservation operations (removing fibres, ufolding parts) when this serves research purposes.

 

Examination

Edition of a papyrus from the Oslo collection (introduction, text, translation and line-by-line commentary).

Successful completion of the coursework gives 5 ECTS credits.
