Organisation

The Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages (IKOS) provides teaching, conducts research and spreads knowledge about religion and culture and language-based area studies, with a particular focus on South Asia, East Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.

The department has several programmes on both the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels.

Of the 110 employees at IKOS, 40 are PhD and post-doctoral fellows. Each year, approx. 500 new students are admitted to the department’s Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programmes. 

IKOS’s research teams are internationally recognised, and the department has student exchange agreements with several highly reputed universities in other countries.

Department management

The head of department is the overall manager of IKOS and the chair of the departmental board. The head of department is employed for a term of four years and appoints a head of research and a head of academic programmes for the period.

The administrative manager is in charge of the administrative aspects of running the department. The programme coordinator is responsible for academic-administrative issues in the department.

Department Board

The Department Board is the department's hightest authority, with responsibility for setting the the department's main objectives, priorities and strategies.
