Exchange agreements

The Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages (IKOS) has exchange agreements with a number of educational institutions in Asia, Europe and USA. All the fields of study in the Bachelor’s programme Asian and African Studies include an obligatory stay abroad as part of the course.

Exchange agreements at IKOS

The department collaborates with the University of Austin, Texas on exchanges within several subject areas. Researchers specialising in South Asia and cultural history visit the University and vice versa. Each year, visiting guest researchers teach the students on the Programme for Asian and African Studies and the Programme for Cultural History and Museology.

IKOS students and international experience

Students on the Programme for Asian and African Studies, the Programme for Cultural History and Museology, the Programme for History of Religion and theatre studies on the Aesthetics Programme can choose to spend their study period abroad at a number of different universities that are highly renowned in subject areas within the department’s portfolio, including:

  • Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Europäische Ethnologie, Berlin (Cultural History)
  • Waseda University, Tokyo (Japanese)
  • Zhejiang University, Hangzhou (Chinese)
  • Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München - Fakultät für Kulturwissenschaften, Munich (History of Religion)
  • Salford University, Manchester (Theatre Studies)
  • Institut Français du Proche-Orient, Damascus (Middle East and Africa)
  • Rutgers University, New Brunswick (South Asia)

All Bachelor’s students on the programme Asian and African studies must spend a semester abroad, studying at one of the following universities:

  • Josai International University (Japanese studies)
  • Peking University, Beijing (Chinese studies)
  • Damascus University, Damascus (Middle East studies with Arabic)
  • University of Haifa, Haifa (Middle East studies with Hebrew)
  • Teheran University, Teheran (Middle East studies with Persian)
  • Bogazici University, Istanbul (Middle East studies with Turkish)
  • Hyderabad University, Hyderabad (South Asia area studies)
  • The Indo-European Educational Society, Jaipur (South Asia studies with Hindi)
  • Kuppuswami Sastri Research Institute, Chennai (South Asia studies with Sanskrit)
