Academic Interests
My overall research interest is Persian cultural history with emphasis on continuities between Classical antiquity and the Middle Ages. I have special competency in Persian literature, poetics and philology in the Iranian cultural renaissance (c. 900–1300). This renaissance occured in the Iranian cultural sphere, covering the whole of present-day Iran, Afghanistan, the Caucasus and Central Asia.
My area of specialization also includes Iranian religious history, particularly Zoroastrianism, Sufism and Shi'ite thought in modern Iran. My doctoral thesis focused on contemporary Iranian intellectual debates and was published at Routledge (Taylor & Francis) in 2003.
