Academic Interests

I am a social anthropologist with particular interest in medicine, doctor-patient-interaction, the body, rituals, hierarchies and power, and Japan.

In my PhD project I plan to examine to what extent the psychology of ritual plays a role in doctor-patient interaction, how ritual processes are intertwined with biomedical curing processes, and whether an analysis of the psychology of ritual can help explain processes of medicalization, and shed light on the role of biomedicine in post-industrial societies.

I am planning to base the analysis of ethnographic fieldwork in Japan during 2011.
