Research

My current research focuses on the Islamic Movement in Israel based on ethnographic material collected on fieldtrips in Israel from 2008 onwards. In order to resist and limit the pressures and influence by the Israeli state and Jewish society on Muslim Palestinian citizens of Israel, this Islamic Movement has adopted the approach of self-reliance which it advances through the establishment and maintenance of institutions and organisations that cater to its constituency. The goals of this strategy are to provide the constituency with facilities and services that are not provided by the state and that have an Islamic content and outlook, which in turn serves to develop and (re)introduce the Muslim Palestinian Arab identity promoted by the Movement. This project analyses the ideas and identity transmitted through the institutions of the Islamic Movement in Israel and examines the relationship of this Movement and its followers to the Jewish and non-Muslim Palestinian groups in the Israeli society.
