Research topic: The Middle East

The Middle East has been the crucible of several of the world's oldest civilisations and has given birth to three major religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

The region is home to several cultures. Arabic, Persian and Turkish are the most spoken languages, each with their own rich literary tradition. The region lies at the point where Asia, Africa and Europe converge. Throughout history this has contributed to the development of a rich and varied culture, as well as giving the region enormous strategic significance in global politics.

Today the area is full of political, cultural, social and economic contrasts. Much international attention is devoted to conflicts whose origins lie in the region.
