Faglige interesser

Mitt forskningsfelt er samfunn og politikk i det moderne Kina, med særlig vekt på utdanning og ungdom, individualiseringsprosesser, etniske mindretall, og kinesisk migrasjon til minoritetsområder. Min forskning er i vid utstrekning basert på feltarbeid i provinsene Yunnan, Gansu, Zhejiang, og Fujian. Jeg arbeider for tiden med et prosjekt om utdanning i landområder, læringskultur, og forholdet mellem individ og kollektiv i skoleutdanningen.

Jeg har tilbragt mer enn 6 år i Kina, først som student i Shandong fra 1986-88, siden i forbindelse med feltabeid i forskjellige deler av landet. Fra 2011-12 var jeg gæsteprofessor på Chinese University of Hong Kong, Department of Anthropology.
