PhD Project

In my project i bring alphabetical epigraphy in the late viking age and medieval north into focus. Alphabetical inscriptions are compared with runic inscriptions and manuscript texts in order to determine their place within the different medieval writing cultures in Scandinavia. My study is theoretically based in the terms schriftlichkeit and verschriftlichung. This pair of terms grounds in the idea that on the one hand there exists a continuum between oral and written texts and on the other hand that the development from oral to written culture goes hand in hand with changes in society. More specifically, I investigate which oral and written elements the alphabetical inscriptions share with the other writing cultures in Scandinavia, and how this can be connected to the societal context. Alphabetical epigraphy has received only limited attention in Scandinavia, which entails that a great deal of effort will be spent on collecting inscriptions in order to make them available for future research.
