Second Circular

Trends and Traditions in English Corpus Linguistics

in honour of Stig Johansson

Dear ICAMErs,

We hope that you had a good start to 2011 and that the New Year will be a happy and successful one for you! The Oslo organising team are very much looking forward to hosting this year’s ICAME Conference – and we hope that we can welcome many of you in Oslo in the first week of June 2011.

In this second circular, we would like to inform you about the outcome of the abstract review process as well as the procedures for conference registration and accommodation, including the individual costs for ICAME 2011.

Abstract review

As you know, the deadline for abstract submissions was 1 December 2010. We were happy to receive a great number of abstract submissions. Each abstract was assessed by two reviewers, whose reports were the basis for accepting or rejecting the submission as well as for assigning it to a category of presentation. Notifications were sent out on 22 January. We are very grateful to all the abstract reviewers for the tremendous amount of work they have invested. The double-blind review process has certainly helped us to ensure a very high quality of the conference programme.

Costs and registration

The conference fee of NOK 375 includes the ICAME journal.  The fee does not include accommodation. We would advise you to take accommodation at the conference hotel Clarion Hotel Royal Christiania, where we have reserved 170 units (a max. of 100 can be used as twin/double rooms - an option that we would highly recommend).

For participants not staying at the conference hotel there is an additional fee of NOK 1980, which covers lunch at the conference hotel on Thursday and Saturday, dinner at the conference hotel on Thursday, the Gala dinner and refreshments throughout the conference. (For participants staying at the conference hotel, this is included in the hotel cost.)

Reservations at Clarion Hotel Royal Christiania can be made until 1 April 2011. Participants are requested to reserve their rooms themselves and pay directly to the hotel upon arrival/departure. Contact details for Clarion Hotel Royal Christiania:

Please mention "ICAME conference" when contacting the hotel. If you wish to stay an extra night before or after the conference, please make your reservations accordingly. An overview of the total cost of the conference (staying 4 nights at the conference hotel – 1-5 June) can be found at the conference website (http://www.uio.no/icame2011/accommodation.html).

Pre-conference workshops and opening plenary on Wednesday 1 June

There will be three pre-conference workshops on Wednesday afternoon from 1 p.m.:

1          Corpus-based contrastive analysis. Organised by Karin Aijmer and Bengt Altenberg.

2          Do we still need language corpora? Debate organised by Ylva Berglund Prytz and Martin Wynne. (NB: starts at 2 p.m.)

3          From multigenre to register-specific historical corpora. Organised by Merja Kytö and Irma Taavitsainen.

There will be no extra charge for these workshops. Please see the conference website for further information (http://www.uio.no/icame2011/workshops.html). To give us a rough idea of how many people will attend the workshops, please indicate your choice in the registration form (not binding).

The opening plenary of the conference will be given by Prof. David Crystal on Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. at the old university campus in the city centre. His lecture is entitled "'O brave new world, that has such corpora in it!'  New trends and traditions on the Internet." After the lecture we will walk to Oslo City Hall for a reception.

Bursaries

Early career ICAMErs who have had a full paper accepted for the conference should note that they may apply to be considered for the John Sinclair Bursary for delivering the best paper. The bursary was founded by the ICAME Board in 2009 in memory of John Sinclair and is awarded on a yearly basis. The winner receives a prize of €100; the winner and the runner-up both receive a certificate.

There will also be a Stig Johansson Bursary for the best poster presentation. This bursary will be awarded at the Oslo conference in memory of Stig Johansson. All participants presenting a poster may apply to be considered for this bursary. The winner receives a prize of €50.

Delegates who wish to be considered for either bursary may apply for this by ticking the appropriate box in the registration form at http://www.uio.no/icame2011/registration.html.

Excursion and gala dinner

The excursion will take place on Friday afternoon and will include a boat trip on the Oslo Fjord and a visit to the Viking Ship Museum at Bygdøy. The Gala Dinner will take place at the conference hotel on Saturday evening. The cost of both events is included in the conference fee / hotel package.

For further information on the conference, accommodation, registration and payment, please see the conference website at http://www.uio.no/icame2011. The deadline for registration and payment is 1 April 2011.

If you have any questions about registration or any other aspect of the conference, please feel free to contact us at icame2011@ilos.uio.no.
