The Oseberg ship, Viking Ship Museum

The reception at the Oslo City Hall takes place immediately after David Crystal's opening lecture on Wednesday 1 June. The boat trip takes place on Friday afternoon. We embark at Oslo harbour, cruise on the fjord for an hour or two, and disembark at Bygdøy peninsula to visit the Viking Ship Museum. After the museum visit, you may spend the rest of the afternoon/evening at your leisure. There are other museums at Bygdøy which may be of interest to you: Norsk Folkemuseum (the Norwegian Folk Museum), an open-air museum of Norwegian cultural history; the Kon-Tiki Museum, focusing on the adventures of the scientist and explorer Thor Heyerdahl; and the Fram Museum, which tells the story of the Norwegian polar expeditions. The museum peninsula is within easy reach of the Oslo city centre by public transport (bus or boat). The gala dinner takes place on Saturday evening at Hotel Royal Christiania.
