English is the pre-eminent world language and is used in international trade, culture and politics.
Approximately 350 million people in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, all countries where English is the official language, speak English as their mother tongue.
English is also the official language in many other countries in Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Caribbean. English is also the most important foreign language taught in schools in other countries worldwide.
Research and study programmes in English give a high level of linguistic competence as well as an in-depth knowledge of British and American society and culture. This expertise is important for maintaining and strengthening Norway's international position.
At the University of Oslo, study programmes in English-language, literature, and culture are integrated into language studies. The United Kingdom still has a strong position internationally and plays an important role in relation to Europe and the USA.
