Translation Studies symposium
“Voice in Retranslation” is a Translation Studies symposium. As part of the “Voice in Translation” project, it explores the idea that the concept of “voice,” partly imported from other disciplines, can be a powerful tool to describe translation practices and intercultural discursive identity.
The symposium’s focus is on retranslations, i.e. translations of texts that have already been translated into the same language. Retranslation research can compare how older and newer translations treat the various discursive voices in a text (e.g., the narrator’s) and behind that text (e.g., the translator’s). The voices of a retranslated text often relate to those of earlier translations. They may support them, for instance, or be a reaction against them.
