Jakob Lothe er professor i engelsk litteratur. Han var førsteamanuensis i allmenn litteraturvitskap ved Universitetet i Bergen 1987-92 og professor i engelsk litteratur ved Universitetet i Oslo 1993-2020. Han var også professor II ved Universitetet i Bergen 1995-2000 og 2013-15. Han har vore invitert gjesteforskar ved St John's College, University of Oxford (1996-97), Harvard University (2005), University of Cape Town (2010) og Regent Park's College, University of Oxford (2017-18).

Forsking og faglege interesseområde

Engelsk litteratur (særleg modernismen og siste del av 1800-talet), narrativ teori og analyse, fiksjon og film, narrativ etikk, Holocaust- og minnestudiar, relasjonar mellom nordisk og europeisk litteratur. Lothe er fagansvarleg for britisk 1900-tals litteratur i Store norske leksikon (SNL).

Undervisning og rettleiing 

Lothe har undervist ei rekke kurs og seminar om ulike periodar, forfattarar, sjangrar, teoriar og andre aspekt ved engelsk og allmenn litteratur. Han har utvikla og undervist fleire nye kurs, og rettleia mange masteroppgåver og phd-avhandlingar i engelsk og allmenn litteraturvitskap.
