Background

Liv Hausken is Professor and the head of the department's research area Media Aesthetics. She has a doctoral degree (Dr.art.) in Media Studies from the University of Bergen, where she defended her doctoral thesis about modern experience of temporality studied through narrative theory, photography theory and slide-motion film (1999). Her main research interests are within the interdisciplinary field of Media Aesthetics, exploring the relations between technology, aesthetics (perception) and mediation.

She is doing a case study of the biometric passport and investigates the knowledge and power of scientific imaging. She is a MC member of the COST action New Materialism: Networking European Scholarship on 'How matter comes to matter' and a participant in the research network Go Figure: Visualizing Climate Change (FIGO). She is currently co-editing a special issue of Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, Technoscience on The Processes of Imaging / The Imaging of Processes with Bettina Papenburg, Sigrid Schmitz, and Natasha Myers.

Hausken is a member of the board of the Aesthetic Seminar, an open, interdisciplinary seminar at the Humanistic Faculty at the UiO.

Special fields

Liv Hausken's areas of research, teaching and supervision includes photography, scientific imaging, biometrics, surveillance, aesthetics, narrative theory and film.

Current PhD-candidates

Jon Inge Faldalen, writing a doctoral thesis with the working title Still Einstellung: Stillmoving Imagenesis.

Sara R. Yazdani, writing a PhD dissertation on art, media and technology and the work of Wolfgang Tillmans.

Synne Tollerud Bull, working on a PhD project on The Aerial View in Motion.

Maria Moseng, focusing on aesthetic and ethical perspectives in documentary explorations of political violence.

Andreas Ervik (from Nov 1, 2016), A Biology of Media.

Trine K.Haagensen (co supervising with Henning Laugerud, UiB), working on a PhD project on scientific imaging entitled Picture as Paradigm.

Ongoing research projects

Liv Hausken's current research includes the following projects:

  • The Biometric Passport: the project investigates the current practices of biometric passports in a selection of western countries to discuss the subtle shift from identification papers to body surveillance that has taken place through the last part of the twentieth century.
  • The Evidential Force of Brain Images: The project discusses the paradox concerning the seeming accessibility of brain images and the difficulties involved in interpreting them. Photography has, since its inception, been riddled with similar problems. The project explores these similarities (and some striking differences) between photography and brain images, and discusses the knowledge and power of scientific imaging.
  • X-Rays on Photography, a research project where photography is seen through the side door of x-ray imaging. The aim of this study is to have a closer look at some of the basic ideas in the field of photography. The project employs an interdisciplinary strategy to describe and rescribe, define and redefine, some cultural and theoretical premises for ideas of photographic imaging that are easily forgotten, transferred, and transformed without critical attention.
