Background, teaching and research interests

The past five years I have been an assistant professor in cultural theory at the Radboud University Nijmegen, whilst living in Dusseldorf, where I also freelanced as an art critic. Both of these things were splendid fun. In 2016 I spent time in Graz as a visiting professor in Art and Architectural Theory.

Since the official title of my position is associate professor in Media, Culture and Society, I would imagine I will mostly teach courses that are related to either media, culture, and/or society; I know that I will teach audiovisual aesthetics come autumn term, which I am looking forward to tremendously.

My research will focus, as it has the past decade, on cultural theory, in particular those debates concerned with the decline of postmodernism and the emergence of another cultural dominant, one that I and others have come to call metamodernism; and on close textual analysis of films and television series, especially pertaining to cinematography, mise-en-scene, space, and performance.

I am currently working on a book proposal on the trope of the "as-if" in contemporary culture, putting together a special issue of E-Flux on what you might call, I guess, post-truth, or Trump, aesthetics with Rosi Braidotti and another special issue for Film-Philosophy with Catherine Constable and Matt Denny on depthlessness and surface stylistics in film. I am also finishing a number of essays on film performance.

I spend most of my free time hanging out with my two favourite people, my partner Ines and our daughter Lore. I love eating, which, as it turns out, is a surprisingly expensive hobby in Norway. The coffee here in town is superb, so I am drinking lots of that. Hiking is wonderful here. And, well, yes, I guess.. I don't want to reinforce the stereotype, but as a Dutch person, I am kind of fond of ice-skating.
