Academic interests

Ximena Alarcón (BA, MA, PhD) is a sound artist researcher interested in listening to interstitial spaces, such as dreams, underground transportation, and the ‘in-between’ space in the context of migration. Her work focuses on the creation of telematic sonic performances and networked environments to expand our sense of place, using field recordings and spoken word. She studied a BA in Social Communication, at the Universidad Externado de Colombia, and then an MA in Communication and Education at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. At the time of studying her Masters she encountered new media and sound art, and studied with the Quinzena d’Art de Montesquiu’s international artists. She understood how important art practice and all the involved sensorial aspects are to offer insights to conceptual understandings, expanding further her knowledge. She has a PhD in Music, Technology and Innovation from De Montfort University (DMU) and received a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship 2007-2009 (Institute of Creative Technologies- DMU) to conduct her project Sounding Underground. She studied the practice of Deep Listening with Pauline Oliveros, IONE and Heloise Gold, and became a Deep Listening Certified Tutor in 2012. She has incorporated this unique practice into her art-research methods. From 2011 to 2017 she was a Research Fellow at the Creative Research in Sound Arts Practice - CRiSAP, at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London, where she developed her projects Networked Migrations and Sound Matters Framework.

She has been awarded with the Marie Skłodowska Curie Individual Fellowship 2017-2019, to develop at the University of Oslo her project INTIMAL: a novel physical-virtual "embodied system" for relational listening, integrating: body, memory, migration and telematics. As a case study, nine Colombian migrant women in Europe will test INTIMAL in their listening experiences as a catalyst for healing and reconciliation within the context of Colombian post-conflict and peace building.
