  Based on a critical analysis of Orville Peck's music video “Hope to Die” (2019), we explore the correlations between sound production, visual imagery, and gendered subjectivities. Peck, who identifies as gay, signals a breakthrough in country music, as much for his masked looks as his music. Our intention is to unravel the audiovisual details of production in order to disclose Peck's subjectivity. We investigate the aesthetic effects of “Hope to Die” in terms of production, audio engineering, and compositional design, while our hermeneutic approach seeks to uncover the congruences between technology, performativity, subjectivity, and agency. In the main, we argue that the inner workings of the track and video harness an Americana stylistic aesthetic that challenges heteronormative tendencies within mainstream country music through a process of resignification.

  This article explores the idea of audiovisual immersion through the portal of the virtual reality music video. Our focus falls on a close reading of Björk’s video, ‘Family’, which addresses questions of immersion in relation to user-experience, staging, and technological innovation. This article draws on the authors’ responses to the video by considering the implications of VR immersion in a new generation of music video productions. As part of the methodology on offer, a model for music analysis is devised for conceptualising virtual audiovisual space (VAVS) and the inextricable relationships between production and compositional design.

  In this music-analytic interpretation of two love songs from Prince’s Around the World in a Day album, we investigate the properties of groove, arrangement, and vocality, all of which contribute to the artist’s inimitable signature. With a disciplinary grounding in musicology, we demonstrate ways whereby musical features are associated with meaning in recorded songs. Underlying the approach is the notion that it is in the music where Prince’s ingenuity mainly lies. The analysis is informed by an understanding of the technological ramifications of the process on the part of Prince and his audio engineer Susan Rogers.

  During the 2010s a new generation of queer hip hop artists emerged, providing an opportunity to engage with a set of politics defined by art, fashion, lyrics and music. A leading proponent of this movement was Azealia Banks, the controversial rapper, artist and actress from New York. This study instigates a critical investigation of her performance strategies in the track and video, ‘Chasing Time’ (2014), offering up various perspectives that probe into queer agency. It is suggested that techniques of sonic styling necessitate a consideration of subjectivity alongside genre and style. Employing audiovisual methods of analysis, we reflect on the relationship between gendered subjectivity and modalities of queerness as a means for demonstrating how aesthetics are staged and aligned to advanced techniques of production. It is argued that the phenomenon of eroticised agency, through hyperembodied display, is central to understanding body politics. This article opens a space for problematising issues of black female subjectivity in a genre that is traditionally relegated to the male domain.

Det handler om hvordan musikk formidler verdier og idealer i samfunnet, men også om musikkens plass innenfor de destruktive ideologiske forestillingene som lå til grunn for angrepene denne mørke fredagen i Norges historie. Musikk etter 22. juli er skrevet av forskere fra en rekke ulike felt: populærmusikkstudier, litteraturvitenskap, religionsvitenskap, musikk og helse (musikkterapi) og medievitenskap.

Taking up a wide range of British pop stars, Hawkins seeks to find out why so many have cast themselves in roles that often take style to absurd extremes. In this study, male pop artists are mapped against a cultural and historical background through a genealogy of personalities, such as Oscar Wilde, W.H. Auden, Andy Warhol, Noël Coward, Derek Jarmen, David Beckham and countless others. A critical analysis of issues and approaches to musical performance through masculinity becomes the focal point of this fascinating study. Ranging from the sixties to beyond the twentieth century, The British Pop Dandy considers the construction of the male pop icon through the spectacle of videos, live concerts and films. Why do we derive pleasure from the performing body, and how is entertainment linked to categories of gender and sexuality? The author insists that pop performances can be understood through human characteristics that relate to the particulars of dandyism, camp and glamour, and this he theorizes through the work of Charles Baudelaire. One of the political objectives of the dandy is to liberate himself through a denial of the structures that assume fixed identity. Not least, it is acts of queering in pop music that characterize entire generations of male artists in the UK. Setting out to discover what distinguishes the British pop dandy, Hawkins considers the role of music and performance in the articulation of hyperbolic display. It is argued that the recorded voice is a construction that idealizes self-representation, and absorbs the listener's attention. Particularly, camp address in singing practice is taken up in conjunction with a discussion of intimacy, which forms part of the strategy of the performer. In a range of songs and videos selected for music analysis, Hawkins points to the uniqueness of the voice as it expresses a transgressive quality that often comes across 'put-on', naive and vulnerable. To this end, vocal performativity is considered part of music's discursive disciplining through some of the greatest pop tracks, videos, concerts and films of our time. It is also argued that shifting signs of masculinity can be understood through musical process and style. While musicological in its main focus, this study is interdisciplinary and sets out to open new modes of thinking on the complex issues surrounding how masculinity, music and culture have developed in the UK.   Susanna Välimäki’s writings have been pathbreaking in decoding and upsetting the dominant-hegemonic positioning of gendered identity in popular music. Her research into LGBTIQ activism in Finnish pop music reveals that 5-15% of the population of Finland belong to minority groups, and that queer music-making abounds in both mainstream and underground practices. Indeed, queer lives on display in pop, occupy spaces for thinking about the possibility of futurity and activist music research. As well as the musical genres that traditionally fall into the queer zone, queer artists play a major role in the ‘public agenda’. I argue for queerness as a survival strategy for people functioning within and outside the mainstream. Queer pop is characterised by transformative politics, where experiencing fun or playfulness also demands ethical awareness of the pervasive problem of discrimination.

  Theatricality is a recalibration of everyday life. It is part of every performance. It gives credence to popular music and its cultural and political traditions. This presentation opts for an interdisciplinary and intertextual approach in a bid to argue the inextricable links between theatricality, musical personae, and identity. Popular music studies has come a long way in complementing the scholarship of major opera, film, and musical scholars, which has led to an abundance of work on personae, agency, and the problems of authenticity. To show how popular music performances function as powerful arbitrations of the ‘natural’ as much as the artistic, I discuss how masculinity was forged by a Mod sensibility in the 1960s. My focus falls primarily on Paris. If Serge Gainsbourg was considered the Leonard Cohen of French pop music, then Jacques Dutronc (1943) was most definitely le dandy cool, the Gallic Bob Dylan.
