Research topic: Music history
Music history is the study of music from a historical perspective with particular emphasis on understanding the historical and cultural contexts of music and musical activities.
Music has a long history that exists in all cultures. Therefore, acquiring historical knowledge and understanding are requirements for adopting a critical approach in the many subdisciplines of musicology.
When thinking and writing about music history, focus may be on the music itself, the composers and/or performers. The music being studied may be performed, notated or passed on by word of mouth. General and detailed historical studies also provide a basis for historical performance practice.
Another major research area examines musical life, music’s place in society, its function and usage, and the nature of people’s musical encounters and experiences in both the past, as well as the present. This area of music may overlap with the history of music genres – i.e., the processes through which church music, symphonic music, opera, band music and popular music are or have been created, and how they win a place in society's diverse musical consciousness.
