Popular music research is a diverse discipline that encompasses the study of music within jazz, pop and rock-related genres. Research in the department is divided into several subdisciplines with a particular emphasis on aspects related to musical analysis and aesthetics, gender and identity, and technology and production. The primary focus is on music from the 1950s onwards, although some research is also conducted on early popular music.
Popular music research is an interdisciplinary field that combines musicological research with sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, media and film studies, and philosophy and gender studies.
