My research interests lie in the fields of music aesthetics, music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, music analysis and critical theory. Previous projects include Style and Modernity, funded by the Research Council of Norway, which studied the implications of modernist aesthetics for notions of style across a range of musical genres and traditions. I have carried out archival research during several visits to the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel and the Academie der Künste in Berlin, and in 2013 I was a visiting scholar at Royal Holloway, University of London. My monograph on György Ligeti's opera Le Grand Macabre is published by Routledge (see below).

I also compose; my music has been performed by Oslo Sinfonietta, Backbeat Percussion Ensemble, Lore Lixenberg and others in the UK, Norway, and the USA, including performances on BBC Radio 3 and NRK. I am a member of the Norwegian Society of Composers and former member of the editorial board of Studia Musicologica Norvegica (Norwegian Journal of Musicology). I hold a BMus in guitar performance and still play when I get the chance (anything from Bach to Balkan, jazz to free improv.).

I was the elected representative for the fixed-term academic staff on the board of the Faculty of Humanities 2015-2016.
