Identity constructions in learners' texts

Identity negotiation in the Norwegian language test for adult immigrants (Språkprøven i norsk for voksne innvandrere)

About the projectMan with his eyes and mouth covered in post-its with written "norms", "society", "expectarion"

In this project we investigate how learners of Norwegian as a second language present themselves in texts written as part of the Norwegian language test for adult immigrants (Språkprøven i norsk for voksne innvandrere). We investigate the extent to which the test takers negotiate an empowered or diminished identity, whether they are ego-oriented or oriented towards the community, and whether they are benefit or value focused. The texts are written by testees with Vietnamese and Spanish language background and are part of the Norwegian learner corpus (ASK). The unit of analysis is the use of personal pronouns as these have proven to be fruitful in identity studies and we combine the choice of pronouns with the choice of verbs from different semantic fields.
