A conference on the perception of music and speech as part of the ‘Perceiving Representations’ project. In particular, we are interested in whether there are interesting similarities between the perception of these two auditory phenomena, and in gathering together specialists who are working on each to foster fruitful discussions and novel insights.
Super Linguistics is an emerging sub-field of linguistics that applies formal linguistic methodology to objects of study beyond language, such as gestures, music, dance, and non-verbal pictorial representations.

Summary: We experience and understand the world, including music, through body movement–when we hear something, we are able to make sense of it by relating it to our body movements, or form an image in our minds of body movements. Musical Gestures is a collection of essays that explore the relationship between sound and movement. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to the fundamental issues of this subject, drawing on ideas, theories and methods from disciplines such as musicology, music perception, human movement science, cognitive psychology, and computer science.
Postdoctoral researcher Alexander Refsum Jensenius just published the book “Musikk og bevegelse” (Music and movement). This is a text book in Norwegian giving an overview of theory and methods used in the study of music-related movements.

We are happy to welcome Yago de Quay for a Short Term Scientific Mission (STSM) through the COST IC0601 Action on Sonic Interaction Design (SID). He will be working at fourMs from 2 August to 30 September with a project entitled Interactive Music 2.0: User-driven ad hoc dance clubs . Bio and more information below.
Postdoctoral researcher Kyrre Glette participated in (and won!) the 64kB intro competition at the Assembly computer festival in Helsinki. A 64kB intro is an executable program in 64kB which includes realtime generation of graphics and music.
The animation includes a dancing robot, where the motion is based on data recorded with our new Qualisys infrared motion capture system.
