Literature, Cognition and Emotions

Literature engages our thoughts and feelings, and its configurations of language, style and narrative enable new investigations into the many facets of the human mind.

About the project

Literature, Cognition and Emotions is a hub for the exchange of ideas in the emergent field of cognitive literary studies. The project brings together literary studies, linguistics, psychology and neurosciences in a new conversation about the complexity of the human experience. We pursue theoretical investigations and empirical experiments, develop a teaching programme and build connections to the international research community and the public at large.

The topics of our interdisciplinary conversation include in particular (1) the ways in which literature highlights our feelings across different cultures and languages; (2) how literature shapes memories and identities; and (3) the role that literary texts and literary reading play in the digital lifeworld.
