Narratorship and different kinds of perspective-taking

Building on previous work (Hinterwimmer 2018), I compare the formal
properties as well as the licensing conditions of two distinct kinds
of protagonists’ perspective taking in narrative texts, Free Indirect
Discourse (FID) and Viewpoint Shifting (VS). In particular, I will
take a close look at the role that the presence vs. absence of an
involved narrator with an identifiable perspective has on the
availability of FID and VS, respectively. As a case study, the
interplay of the narrator’s and the main protagonist’s perspective in
the crime novel 'Auferstehung der Toten' ('Resurrection of the dead')
by Wolf Haas will be discussed.
