Program leader: Master Program in Modern International and Transnational History (MITRA).

Academic interest

After many years teaching history at all levels of university education in Germany and Denmark I took up my current position as Associate Professor for International Contemporary History with the Department of Archeology, Conservation and History (IAKH) at the University of Oslo in January 2016. Since 2017 I also have the pleasure to serve as the program head of IAKH’s Master Program in Modern International and Transnational History (MITRA).

My research interests are located broadly speaking within two major fields of study: The history of humanitarian aid and the history of internationalism and international organizations, with a special focus on the International Labour Organization (ILO). An overarching concern  that binds these interests together is in the multiple motives and drivers of cross-border activism. This perspective has informed both the work on my latest monograph -  a history of the ILO (“100 years of Global Social Policy”, Berlin/Boston: DeGruyter 2019) - as well as my current book project on US Quakers’ aid activities in the first half of the 20th century. Beyond my research addresses a whole set of related questions including ideas and practises of social justice, development, labour migration and the future of work in a historical perspective.

I was born in Nürnberg, Germany and studied history in Bremen, Bologna and at Ludwig-Maximilians-University München. I am both holding an M.A. (2000) and a Ph.D. (2006) from LMU München. Subsequently I spent seven years, from 2008 to 2014, at Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, first as a junior researcher and from 2010 onwards as a Dilthey-Fellow of the German Volkswagen Foundation. Before coming to Oslo I worked for a year and half as an Assistant Professor for Social and Economic History at Aarhus University.
