Bakgrunn

Jeg har hovedfag i 1986, var NAVF stipendiat fra 1989-1992 og ble tildelt Dr.philos.-graden ved Universitetet i Bergen 1993. Jeg har tidligere vært ansatt i arkeologiske forvaltningsprosjekter og kulturminneforvaltningen og forskningsprosjekter (f.eks. "Skrivarhelleren", "Høgfjellsregisteringer i Aurland"). I 1997-99 ledet jeg (sammen med Lene Melheim og Nils Anfinset) et delprosjekt innen det svensk-norske, tverrfaglige prosjektet "Hällristningar i gränsbygd" INTERREG II (EU-strukturfond) som bl.a. undersøkte bronsealderkulturlag med spor etter metallurgi på det kjente jernaldersgravfeltet på Hunn i Østfold (http://www.hf.uio.no/iakk/hunn/). Fra 1997-2003 var jeg med i "The Scandinavian-Sicilian Archaeological Project" og ledet undersøkelser i området rundt den befestede arkaiske byen på Monte Polizzo (ca. 600-520 f. Kr.) i Salemi, Vest-Sicilia. Dette prosjeket ble videreført i det EU-finansierte prosjektet "Emergence of European Communities" - et samarbeidstiltak mellom University of Cambridge, University of Southampton, Consejo Superior de Invesigaciones Cientifícas; Instituto de Estudios Galegos Padre Sarmiento i Spania, University of Oslo, Matrica Museum, Százhalombatta og Göteborgs Universitet. Jeg har ellers i de senere årene arbeidet med feltprosjekter på Lista (med Karl Kallhovd,  Kulturhistorisk museum) og i nye undersøkelser i Skrivarhelleren (sammen med Lene Melheim, Kulturhistorisk museum). Jeg har også arbeidet med spørsmål om den ulovlige og uetiske handel med arkeologiske gjenstander, forholdet mellom arkeologi og naturvitenskap og minoriteter og kulturarv. Fra 1997-2001 var jeg hovedredaktør for Norwegian Archaeological Review.

Fra 1992-96 var jeg førsteamanuensis ved Arkeologisk institutt, Universitetet i Bergen der jeg hadde hovedansvaret for undervisningen innen "Steinbrukende tid i Norden" - dvs. sen-yngre steinalder, bronsealder og tidlig eldre jernalder, feltkurs og en del metodiske teoretiske og faghistoriske emner. Fra 1996 har jeg arbeidet ved seksjoner for arkeologi ved det humanistiske fakultetet, Universitetet i Oslo. Mine forskningsinteresser her har vært knyttet til yngre steinalder (særlig sen-neolitikum og klokkebegerkulturen), bronsealder og faghistorie med vekt på det nordiske området og vært engasjert i jernalderen i det vestlige Middelhavet. Jeg har ellers samarbeidet med Atle Omland og Josephine Munch Rasmussen for å belyse den uetiske og ulovlige handelen med kulturminner og fagfolks rolle i denne virksomheten, i Norge ikke minst kjent gjennom den såkalte Schøyen-saken.

Jeg har vært engasjert utdanningspolitiske saker knyttet til læringsmiljø og innføring av kvalitetsreformen ved HF og UiO. Jeg ledet HFs studiekomite 1997-2000, var prodekan for utdanning ved HF fra 2000-02 og var instituttleder for IAKK i 2004, var programleder for arkeologi, konservering og kunsthistorie, vært forskningsleder ved IAKH (2013-2016). Jeg deltok i gruppen under Kaare Norum som sto for den interne evalueringen av UiO (Virkelighet og visjon. UiO –et universitet i en brytningstid. EVA – selvevaluering av Universitet i Oslo. Rapport, desember, 2001), og ledet gruppen som sto for del-rapporten om utdanning. Jeg har deltatt i ulike institusjons- og museumsstyrer/ -råd/ -komiteer. I de senere årene har jeg vært særlig engasjert i forskerutdanningen i arkeologi (særlig gjennom "Dialogues With the Past"), forholdet mellom arkeologi og "science", ødeleggelsen av arkeologiske kilder og kulturarven, globalisering og kulturarv, migrasjon og klokkerbegerkulturens betydning i Norden. Felles for disse tema er et kontinentalt perspektiv på forhistorien og et internasjonalt og tverrfaglig syn på forskning.

Undervisnings- og veiledningsområder

Jeg har hatt ansvar for undervisning og veiledning (Bachelor til Phd) i forbindelse med temaer knyttet til yngre steinalder og bronsealder, utmark og fjellet, teoretiske, faghistoriske og metodologiske områder og kulturarv.

Faglige kompetanseområder

Mine forskningsinteresser har vært knyttet til yngre steinalder, bronsealder, fagteori og -historie, kulturarvspørsmål og tverrfaglighet (arkeologi og naturvitenskapene). Jeg har også arbeidet med den sene jernalderen i det vestlige Middelhavet, vært opptatt av den ulovlige og uetiske handelen i kulturminner og kulturarven og krig.
