Research

My research interests lie in the semantics and pragmatics of verbal communication. I am interested in how children acquire their pragmatic abilities, enabling them to use language as a means to express their own intentions and make inferences about the intentions of others. I am also interested in lexical semantics and pragmatics, focusing on how word meanings are modulated in context, and in the challenges associated with modelling human communication and language understanding in AI systems.

I am currently PI on the ERC StG project DEVCOM (2020-2025). The overarching goal of this project is to provide an account of the stages and factors involved in children’s developing pragmatic competence, based on experimental studies of children's understanding and production of non-literal uses of language (e.g., metaphor, metonymy, irony, etc.). I am also PI of the Research Council of Norway FINNUT project Creativity and Convention in Pragmatic Development (2020-2024), which investigates how pragmatic abilities develop in children with typical and atypical development (ASD).

My position is shared between IFIKK (philosophy) and ILN (linguistics), and I am affiliated with Centre for Philosophy and the Sciences (CPS) and Centre for Multilingualism in Society across the Lifespan (MultiLing)
