About the network
Our novel goal is to create and exploit useful interconnections between philosophy of physics and philosophy of science more broadly in order to develop a more-relevant, future-oriented, and comprehensive understanding of scientific theory development and evaluation.
We are interested in science as it is currently, and actually, practised. We engage philosophy of science with cutting-edge physics: The open problems that scientists are working on right now, and where these could lead.
We begin with three workshops:
- Theoretical Virtues and Non-Empirical Guides (Aarhus, November 2022).
- Mathematics in Physics (Oslo, June 2023).
- Philosophy of Experiment (Stockholm, September 2023).
Overall aims
- A new, active, forward-looking philosophy of science, with a focus on cutting edge and future physics;
- Studying scientific methodology in times of crisis, theory-change;
- Developing new and existing accounts of theory development and evaluation that are applicable to current physics;
- Critical analysis of existing philosophical frameworks;
- Better understanding the role of, and relationships between, different guides to theory construction and means of confirmation in physics, both empirical and non-empirical;
- Cultivate a cohesive view of theory development that connects these different guides;
- Develop a workable heuristics applicable to current physics;
- Explore the epistemological and metaphysical assumptions and implications of these results.
