Tittel: What Logic Cannot Achieve: The Real Mistake behind the Paralogistic Inferences

Abstract:

"In our ongoing work on Kant’s Dialectic, we draw on two sets of tools that by and large have been completely ignored. One is Kant’s understanding of infinite judgment, which he counts as a special judgmental form, reducible neither to affirmative nor to negative judgment. The significant feature of infinite judgment is that it has existential import, but still no positive conceptual content. The other tool is Kant’s doubled layer theory of modality in which he distinguishes modalities of truth from modalities of existence. In this talk we will show how, by applying these two tools, spiced up with some considerations of modern logic, one can pinpoint the failures of the paralogistic inferences about the soul, without seeking refuge in transcendental idealism. It is our contention that Kantʼs main criticism in the Paralogisms – indeed in the whole of the Dialectic – is directed at the dogmatic metaphysicianʼs haphazard blurring of the line between logic and metaphysics. In short what Kant tries to show is that logic cannot show the existence of its subject matter and hence can never suffice for metaphysics proper."
