Tittel: Is Attention the Form of Consciousness?

ABSTRACT: What is the relationship between attention and consciousness? Much recent work in philosophy, psychology and the neurosciences deals with this question. Some argue that attention is necessary for consciousness, some that it is sufficient, some that it both, and some that it is neither. Often this debate has centered on whether attention is a necessary or sufficient part of a reductive explanation of consciousness. In this talk, I offer a very different take on the connection between attention and consciousness. Attention and consciousness, on the view I propose, are both subject level phenomena. None reductively explains the other. They are more intimately related then that: attention is essential to the nature of consciousness, to what it is to be consciousness. On the view I argue for, conscious experiences are complex unities with many aspects or parts. Attentional organization provides a principle of unity for conscious experience, i.e. it is a relationship between the parts of a conscious perspective that occurs in essence of consciousness. Attention is what builds conscious perspectives. It is the form of consciousness, while appearances are its matter. Conscious experience provides subjects with a subjective field, perspective or point of view because its various parts are structured by attention into what is more central and what is more peripheral.
