Tittel: Can Nuclear Deterrence be Morally Justified?

Abstract:

"In the second half of the last century, the ethics of nuclear deterrence was a subject of heated debate among philosophers, with interventions inter alia by Michael Walzer, Paul Ramsey, David Gauthier, and Gregory Kavka. Interest in the subject has since waned. But today it merits to be taken up anew, both in light of the recent exchange of threats between North Korea and the US, and because the doctrine of deterrence is often advanced as a rationale for opposing nuclear disarmament. Reichberg’s presentation will have three parts. First he will explain what deterrence is by framing it as a distinctive kind of speech act, namely a threat. Next he will examine some standard arguments for and against the moral justifiability of deterrence. He will conclude with a comment about the implications for nuclear disarmament."
