Academic interests

Frøystad is a social anthropologist working on religious complexity in India. Since 2014 she has primarily been interested in practices assumed to promote cohesion in multi-religious societies, paying particular attention to ritual participation across religious boundaries and the legal regulation of religious offence.

Frøystad has also conducted research on the growth of New Age-inspired religious movements amongst the Indian middle classes since the 1990s as well as on everyday Hindu nationalist rhetoric and its articulation with social inequalities.
