About the Project

Materia Medica – Medicinal plants and the circulation of knowledge in the Mediterranean. The project probes the interface between conventional biomedicine, traditional medicine (TM) and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and investigates the use of traditional knowledge about medicinal culinary plants in different Mediterranean countries. It questions the restrictions and regulations that have been implemented in recent years so as to control their harvesting, use and sale.

The project is interested in the transformation of local knowledge into a global knowledge and its exploitation by governmental organizations and NGOs. It explores the sustainability of traditional local medical knowledge and its change into a regulated regional common cultural heritage pertaining to home based care and diet.
