Pragmatists despite themselves? Egypt's political salafis

A seminar with Prof. Bjørn Olav Utvik, University of Oslo

In the Egyptian legislative elections of late 2011, the first after the fall of the dictatorship, the great surprise was the strong showing of the hitherto apolitical salafi movements. How are we to understand what happened? What does the novel political engagement of these conservative Islamists signify? How will the salafis themselves be affected by their participation in a competitive political arena?
