Phd project

My project will be looking into the diachronic relation of the two weak inflection classes of verbs in Norwegian, the so called kasta class and dømme class. The main focus will be directed onto inflection class shifts when verbs belonging to kasta class adopt the dømme class inflection, e.g. the verb baka belonged to kasta class in Old Norse, but in many modern Norwegian dialects it is a member of dømme class with the past tense form bakte instead of baka. This phenomena exists to some point in most Norwegian dialects. However, it is particularly widespread in Southeastern dialects – kaste class is hardly existent in some of these dialects (cf. Sandøy 1990: 66). While some inflection class shifts are easily accounted for by extramorphological factors (e.g. phonological form), the degree to which dømme class has become dominant in Southeastern dialects, is not. This phenomena is rather unexpected due to several reasons. Kasta class is reported to be the most type frequent inflection class in Old Norse and it is expected that such classes grow (cf. Fertig 2013; Bybee & Beckner 2015; Yang 2016). However, the opposite seems to have happened in Southeastern dialects. Furthermore, inflectional class shifts to dømme class have in some cases resulted in phonologically 'marked' forms (e.g. syklte). This is also unexpected in language change. The aim of this project is to contribute to the understanding of language change and development of the language change theory, especially regarding factors that influence the productivity of particular inflection patterns.

Background

  • I have several years of teaching experience as a Norwegian language teacher at language schools, UiO (NORINT) and USN (Norwegian courses for employees). I have also worked as a group teacher for NOR1100 (Norwegian grammar). Right before I started as a doctoral research fellow, I have been working with examining school-related skills of children and youth in order to determine the most suitable educational program for them in the Norwegian system.
  • Master's degree in Norwegian linguistics from UiO, 2022. My thesis: Er sterke verb sterke fordi de trener mye? En studie av klasseskifter svak → sterk og sterk → sterk basert på data fra norske dialekter
  • Bachelor's degree in Scandinavian studies from Vilnius University, 2020. The project was looking at the acquisition and assignment of grammatical gender in Norwegian interlanguage when the learners mother tongue is Lithuanian.
