Academic interests

My research currently focuses on American Norwegian, the variety of Norwegian spoken in North America as a heritage language.

In my PhD project, I am particularly focussing on definiteness marking in American Norwegian. The first aim is to describe the use of definiteness marking by speakers of American Norwegian and the ways this differs from Norwegian spoken in Norway. The second aim of the project is to explain these differences and provide a syntactic analysis of the American Norwegian noun phrase.

The data of the project consist of both spontaneous speech available in the Corpus of American Norwegian Speech (CANS), and experimental data collected during fieldwork in the United States.

Background

I received my BA in Dutch Language and Culture from the University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands), in 2013. During this BA, I took electives in Dutch linguistics and general linguistics. In 2015, I received my MA in Linguistics from the University of Amsterdam. I have mainly focused on syntax, language change and language variation in my studies, and these fields are combined in my current research project.

Other

I was a member of the organizing committee of the 3rd Norwegian Graduate Student Conference in Linguistics and Philology (NoSLiP), held in Oslo 15.02.2018 - 16.02.2018

I was also part of the local organizing team of GLOW42 (Generative Linguistics in the Old World), held in Oslo, 07.05.2019 - 11.05.2019.
