Defrosting frozen metaphors: idiom extensions and the proper representation of idiomatic expressions
Jamie Findlay snakker om hva idiomer egentlig er.
Idioms are sometimes described as 'frozen metaphors': many have their origins in productive metaphorical language, but are now opaque and conventionalized. Analyzes of idioms tend to emphasize either the 'frozen' or the 'metaphor' part of this description, representing their special meanings either as directly encoded or as processed online via a metaphorical mapping. This talk presents evidence from both sides of this debate, and suggests that both are right, since there are actually two distinct modes of idiom usage.
