Reading is Based in Imagination: An Embodied and Multi-scalar View on Reading
In this talk I present an embodied, distributed and dialogical view on reading and its implications for practice and research. While reading is not just a mental process used to interpret ‘text’ and process symbolic information, its distributed nature can be studied by zooming in on how the whole body is engaged in reading and how the activity enables the reader to enact an explorative attitude towards self and others. Based on video-analysis of such reading activities, I show how readers use voice-tracking and gestures to fuse skilled embodiment with creative imagination in ways that reveal their dialogical capabilities. Such embodied and dialogical view of reading impacts on how we teach, educate, assess and encourage readers to engage with texts – and it opens up new directions for model-building within linguistics, neuroscience and the cognitive sciences.
