Frank Esser is Professor II at the Department of Media and Communication at the University of Oslo. He is Professor of International and Comparative Media Research, at the Institute of Mass Communication and Media Research, University of Zurich. Previously, Esser has also been visiting professor at the University of Oklahoma (Norman), University of Texas (Austin) and the University of California (San Diego). Esser is presently Chair of Political Communication Section of European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA), and is also well integrated in several leading research networks. He is an author of eleven books and over 150 book chapters and articles.
Frank Esser’s main interest lies in cross-national studies of news journalism and political communication, but his publications cover several broader categories, such as methods of comparative (political) communication; mediatization of politics; news cultures and journalistic traditions; political publicity (‘spin doctoring’) and media-on-media reporting (‘metacoverage’); democratic news performance; populism; and socialization of young people.
