Engaging in research with children and young people introduces a range of ethical dilemmas, particularly when such engagement focuses on the use of the Internet and digital media.

Ethical dilemmas

Children are considered vulnerable participants in research and as such researchers need to take particular care when engaging with them. Researchers need to take particular steps to explain the potential consequences of research participation to children and young people.

They also need to consider how they will act in the case that they discover that children and young people are or may be harmed during the course of research.

Furthermore, and in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, researchers should be mindful to engage with and listen to the voices of children and young people, and to respect their experiences and concerns, when conducting research.

Our research focuses on:

  • Informed consent

  • Considerations about research participation
  • Incidental findings
  • Agency and voice
