Our experience of climate change is always mediated. Its effects are encountered through changing weather patterns, including the storms, floods, and droughts that afflict communities across the world. They are also encountered through different forms of representation: a novel imagining a desiccated future Earth; a television documentary about coral bleaching; a graph of rising global temperatures. Researchers increasingly understand climate change as a cultural and political issue, and are concerned with the ways in which it is mediated in different contexts, and to different audiences.

Installation as an interactive experience: a phenomenological and cognitive approach in an interartistic and intercultural perspective.

We are soliciting chapter abstracts for an edited collection tentatively titled
“Critical Distance: New Explorations in Documentary Theory and Practice.”
The field of documentary studies has vastly expanded since the early 1990s when foundational publications established the critical paradigms towards which scholars would gravitate to shed light on nonfiction film. Over the past two decades, a number of dedicated journals, annual conferences, and book series have consolidated documentary studies under the leadership of an active community of scholars.

The fields of new materialism(s) and transgender studies are both developing rapidly, with exciting interdisciplinary work being conducted (Hayward, 2010; Irni, 2013; Simpkins, 2016). However, there is seldom a platform where academic, artists and activist researchers working with these streams can share ideas and collaborate. It is often at the intersection of academic, artistic and activist work that new imageries are proposed, and trans matters explored, (dis)organized, visibilized and politicized. This special issue aims at opening up this platform for interdisciplinary discussion around the theme of trans-materialities.
