My doctoral project investigates polyphonic music associated with the papal curia in the time between the Great Western Schism and the Council of Basle. I'm interested in how the manifold socio-poltical problems of this period shaped musical and poetic creativity and what role polyphony played in different learned communities. In particular, I am exploring how the extant 'papal' compositions interacted with their potential audience in order to unfold their intended meaning.
