Research topic: Jazz
Jazz is originally an American musical tradition which combines elements from both Afro-American and Euro-American music.
This genre has a broad stylistic range, from ragtime, swing and bebop to free jazz, fusion and modern electronic jazz.
Jazz constitutes part of several research contexts at the department, ranging from early Norwegian jazz history to Norwegian jazz in the 1970s, taken from an international perspective. It is one of several genres studied within the department’s very active rhythm research environment, which examines micro-rhythmic relationships – how rhythms are played rather than notated. Jazz is also studied as a component of the overall musical and audio environments of our time.
